Hypervitaminosis E in the chick.

چکیده
BONE lesions have been described in animals given large doses of vitamin A. The bones are reduced in thickness and fractures are frequent (Moore, 1957). Much of this work has been done on the rat (Moore and Wang, 1945; Wolbach, 1947; Thompson and Pitt, 1960), but lesions have been described in other species including guinea-pigs (Wolbach, 1947), calves (Grey, Nielsen, Rousseau, Calhoun and Eaton, 1965) and man (Persson, Tunell and Ekengren, 1965). Rigdon, Rude and Bieri (1951) did not find lesions in the bones of hypervitaminotic ducklings but in contrast Wolbach and Hegsted found that hypervitaminosis A produced bone lesions in chicks (1952c) and in ducks (1953). Poumeau-Delille (1943) and Walker, Eylenberg and Moore (1947) recorded a marked reduction in the number of red blood cells in hypervitaminotic rats. The purpose of the work reported here was to investigate some aspects of the gross, histoand chemical pathology of hypervitaminosis A in chicks and to contrast the changes in bone with those observed in vitamin A deficient birds by Howell and Thompson (1967a, b).

Hypervitaminosis D3 in broiler chicks: histopathological, immunomodulatory and immunohistochemical approach
The present study was undertaken to investigate the toxic effects of higher doses (1,00,000 IU i.e. 2.5 mg/kg body weight (BW)) of vitamin D3, concomitantly with bacterial endotoxins (lipopolysaccharides: LPS) to study the immunomodulatory potential of vitamin D3 in IBL-80 broiler chicks. The chicks were divided into four groups [group I (NSS), group II (LPS), group III (Vit. D3 + NSS), and gro...
متن کاملInvestigation on bioavailability of rumen bacterial and protozoal phosphorus using a chick-model
Ruminal bacteria and protozoa provide excellent organic phosphorus (P) sources for the host animal. This experiment was conducted to compare the bioavailability of bacterial and protozoal P in comparison with that of dicalcium phosphate (DCP) as a reference phosphorus source. Bacteria and protozoa were isolated from the rumen contents of dairy cows and the chick-model was used to determine the ...
متن کاملComparison of the Effects of Papain and Vitamin a on Cartilage
The effects of papain protease and of vitamin A on explanted limb bone rudiments from 7- and 13-day chick embryos and fetal mice have been studied and compared. The incubation of cartilaginous rudiments from 7-day chick embryos in a solution containing papain and cysteine resulted in complete loss of the metachromasia of the cartilage matrix within 1 hour; explants treated in this fashion recov...
متن کاملEffects of Hypervitaminosis a and D on Skeletal Metabolism.
The feeding of escessive amounts of vitamin D to animals causes pathological changes in the skeleton and calcification of soft tissues (l-4). Hypervitaminosis A causes bone fragility. Spontaneous fractures occur in growing rats, whereas in the adult rat only rarefaction develops (5-8). Although excesses of each vitamin cause specific pathological changes, the concomitant feeding of toxic amount...
متن کاملHYPERVITAMINOSIS A-INDUCED CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM DEFECTS
In this investigation the effects of excess vitamin A administration during the early embryonic period were studied. Intramuscular injection of a single dose of 15000,20000 or 25000 IU/kg vitamin A to pregnant Balb/c strain mice on either day 7,8,9 or 10 of gestation (vaginal plug= day 0 of gestation) produced major malformations in the central nervous system (CNS) including exencephaly, h...
